Dec 202017

28th:  Still struggling with the new extender. These were cropped by 1/3 height. It was dark but so was the Buzzard shot on the 14th which was only slightly cropped so the bird was about half as close. What is worse is that the flying birds were complete throw away.

These Ravens taken on 26th have fairly sharp claws which gives me hope. It was cropped at less than 1/3 of height

: I bought a new 1.4 extender again. I bought one about a year ago but had to return it as none of my photos were sharp. I was hesitant about trying again as returning things bought on-line is never certain (although I’ve never had a problem so far.) Yesterday I didn’t get any sharp shots but the lens is slower to focus with the extender so flying birds need some allowance. This Hen Harrier from yesterday was taken 20 minutes before sunset with the sun hidden behind hills and cloud, i.e. dark and it was moving fast (cropped by 1/3 of height).

This isn’t a great shot of a Kestrel taken today but it does look fairly sharp considering it was shot at 1000 ISO and is cropped to a third of height.

26th: 2 Gannets off reef at north of Calgary bay mouth and 1 Red Grouse beside our water tank

25th: 3 Red Grouse to west of Sitheans, and 4 (possible overlap) coming East, down from Cruachan Treshnish
6+ Long-tailed Tits at Treshnish Old Schoolhouse.

: Long-tailed Tits heard in Treshnish wood.

Went back to look for the lower mandible of the dead Hen Harrier but couldn’t find it so collected all the remains I could find hoping it is amongst the smaller feathers, bones and vole skulls. [Yes found it so photos to follow]

16th: Found the remains of a medium size raptor on Cruachan Treshnish. I thought it must be a Hen Harrier because of the rufous edge to some flight feathers which had too much white for a Buzzard and were too dark for a Short-eared Owl. Checking the internet seems to confirm it as a Hen Harrier.

14th: North wind brought pair of Golden Eagles over Treshnish Old Schoolhouse (probably the nearest pair).

For identification only:

and male

11th: North wind brought 1 Peregrine and a pair of Golden Eagles over Treshnish Old Schoolhouse at 4.07 too late for photos and earlier 1 immature White-tailed Eagle over Treshnish Old Schoolhouse.

9th: 2 grey geese probably Greenland White-fronted Geese flying from Treshnish lochan direction to Calgary

3rd: at least 8 Long-tailed Tits at Treshnish Old Schoolhouse.
